STATEMENT OF FAITH (abbreviated):
1. We believe in the verbal plenary inspiration and authority of the
Scriptures.
2. We believe that the Bible reveals God, the
fall of man, the way of salvation and God’s plan and
purpose in the ages.
3. We believe in God the Father, God the Son and God the
Holy Spirit.
4. We believe in the deity, virgin birth, substitutionary
atonement, and bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ.
5. We believe that salvation is “by grace,” plus nothing
and minus nothing. The conditions to salvation are
repentance and faith. No works as baptism, communion or church membership aid in salvation.
6. We believe that men are justified by faith alone and are
accounted righteous before God only through the merit
of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Justification
establishes an eternal relationship that can never be
broken. We believe in the eternal security of the believer.
7. We believe upon salvation every believer is sealed with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit fills believers yielded to Him. We believe the Holy Spit gifts every believer,*
8. We believe in the visible, personal and premillennial
return of Jesus Christ.
9. We believe in the everlasting conscious blessedness of
the saved and the everlasting conscious punishment of
the lost.
10. We are a Baptist ministry and our resources are limitted. While we appreciate believers from many back rounds, the retreat is for Bible believing Baptists or those who are in agreement with our statement of faith. This is at our discretion.
*We believe certain sign gifts have passed off of the scene or ceased to exist as described in 1Cor 12.
Among these are prophecy, as a revalatory gift and tongues.
A. Prophecy - This prophecy ended when the scriptures were completed.
1Co 13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
There is no longer a need for prophesy, which today would be extra biblical revelation. The Bible is complete. The Bible is “that which is perfect is come”.
Many have tried to say because I have experienced these so called phenomena that it is for today. It is not experience that we must use as the acid test for our faith, but our the only rule for faith and practice is the finished Word of God.
B. Tongues - The tongues of the day of Pentecost were clearly known languages.
Act 2:8 ff And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
The gift of tongues is finished and the last use of tongues chronologically in the Bible is in Acts 19.
Act 19:3-6 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
Tongues shall cease.
Cease is in the middle voice. They have run their intended course and end when they have accomplished their purpose they cease or end. Since the scriptures do not mention tongues after Acts 19 (chronologically) it is sure they have ceased and not operative today. Experience, what you may, does not prove tongues exist today. Peter had one of the greatest experiences in the New Testament.
2Pe 1:16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
